Chapter Fourteen

Archon

Archon smelled the men coming, heard the crunch of gravel under their feet, his senses so keen he could even hear the saliva swirling around excitedly in their mouth. He knew the men had come to fight, perhaps even kill.

“Leah,” Archon said. “We are in danger.”

“No shit you’re in danger,” one of the men said. The ball cap-wearing man—who Archon felt for certain was the de facto leader of the ragtag group—grinned.

“Turn over my money, and anything else you have on you, and I’ll let you and your fine piece of ass walk out of here alive.”

Archon’s eyes narrowed to slits. “You foolish knave… I’d have parted with my money without a second thought. But you had to go and speak to Leah like that, didn’t you?”

Archon doffed his leather coat. A murmur of fearful appreciation rang out from the ring of men surrounding them. Archon flexed, his thin shirt ripping in several spots.

“The bigger they are, the harder they fall!” One of the men stepped forward, swinging a metal truncheon of some sort at Archon’s head. Archon could have easily moved out of the way. He could have caught the man’s wrist with ease.

But he wanted to send a message. While he had no fear of taking all the men on at once, he did fear for Leah’s safety. If he could make them flee without a fight, he would do so.

Thus, he just let the metal pipe land right between his eyes. Archon didn’t even blink, not even when a thin rivulet of blood ran down the bridge of his nose.

“Is it my turn now?” He asked sweetly.

With a shout, the men were upon him. They didn’t run in fear as he had hoped they would. Archon lashed out with his fist, choosing not to kill. He restrained himself, but still, he crumpled the pipe-wielding man’s nose like aluminum foil.

Someone struck him on the back and shoulders with a long wooden stick. It hurt, and Archon spun around and snatched the stick—which read ‘Louisville slugger’ along the fat end—and yanked it out of the man’s hands.

He threw the cudgel into the face of a man who was attempting to drag Leah behind one of the trailers. It cracked off his skull and he hollered in pain. Leah kicked him between the legs and he doubled over. Then she brought her knee straight up into his jaw. The man flopped to the pavement, unconscious.

Archon had no more time to spare because the leader and three other men were grappling him. “Get him down, get him down! Big guys aren’t so dangerous on their backs.”

“You may test that assumption at your convenience,” Archon growled. He was rapidly losing his cool. If these fools did not leave him be soon enough, his lion would roar forth, and then there would be blood.

Archon planted his feet and snapped his head forward. His forehead connected with the temple of one of the men grappling him, and the man fell away. Now with
